Herbs

Basil Ground – basil, also referred to as sweet basil, is considered the “king” of the family of herbs, which includes mint, oregano, rosemary, and sage.  It is native to India and cultivated in Asia, growing well in warm, semi-tropical regions, as well as some parts of the U.S. and the Mediterranean countries.  Basil leaves ground to a fine powder are used in vegetables, soups, and tomato sauces such as pesto.  We stock sifted and sifted premier basil, as well.

Bay Leaves Ground – adds a rich flavor to soups, vegetables, meats, and fish.  Used in Bouquet Garni, a combination of bay leaves, parsley, and thyme, allowed to simmer while cooking.  Grown in the Mediterranean countries, bay leaves, also known as sweet laurel, are ground for a more pungent flavor and used in the same dishes, primarily for convenience rather than using whole leaves.

Coriander – these herbs are native to Asia and North Africa.  The entire plant is edible, but the leaves, cilantro, and the seeds, coriander, are most commonly used in Mexican salsas, Vietnamese dishes, and Indian curries.  Coriander seeds are also used in German sausage and some beers.

Marjoram Sifted – a type of oregano, with a more delicate, sweeter taste, grown primarily in Egypt.  The leaves are ground and finely sifted to be used in sausages, lamb, stuffing, chicken, beef, and chowders.

Tarragon – the plant has dark green leaves that have a licorice-like flavor when dried.  Tarragon grows primarily in France, and is easily blended with other herbs or spices.  Tarragon is a main ingredient in Dijon mustard, Béarnaise sauce, and vinegar.

Thyme Leaves Sifted – there are hundreds of species of thyme, extremely hardy culinary herbs.  The leaves are crushed or ground and sifted and used in European cuisine, especially in France.  The Greeks use thyme to season dolmas, stuffed grape leaves, and it is sometimes used in Moroccan foods, as well.  Thyme can be used liberally due to its mild flavor.

Natco ingredients sells bulk quantities of many other herbs including oregano, parsley, mint, rosemary, and sage.
