Ginger

Ginger is a common spice used throughout the world. It is believed that it originated in China and then cultivation of it spread to India, West Africa and the Caribbean. Ginger’s pungent taste adds unique flavor to main dishes, deserts, and even drinks. It is also used through out the world as a homeopathic medicine.

Ginger is used in the culinary art of almost every country. Young ginger roots are often pickled and eaten as a snack in Asian countries.  They can also be stewed to make ginger tea and honey. Mature ginger is used as a spice in Chinese dishes which contain seafood. A ginger flavored liqueur called Canton is popular in China. Ginger wine is popular in the United Kingdom. In Japan, ginger is grated raw on tofu and noodles. In Myanmar, the locals eat a salad made up of shredded ginger, nuts, seeds, and oil.  In South East Asia, the flower of ginger is used in salads.

Ginger  has been known throughout history as a cure for many discomforts of the stomach and head. Ginger is a popular cure for upset stomach. People suffering from colds often drink ginger ale. Chinese women traditionally eat ginger root during pregnancy to combat morning sickness. In India, ginger is applied to the temples to relieve headache. In Myanmar, ginger is  taken to prevent the flu. Studies show that ginger decreases inflammation from arthritis. It may also lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

Not only is ginger good to eat, but it is also very beautiful. The ginger plant produces clusters of white and pink flower buds that bloom into yellow flowers. The beauty of this plant make it a favorite for landscapers  in subtropical regions.

Ginger has its’ place in popular culture as more than just a spice. In Scotland ginger is used to refer to any carbonated drink.. Ginger is used to describe red heads in Great Britain. During WW I, mounted regiments put ginger suppositories in their horses. The burning sensation made the horses hold their tales up.

There is no other spice that has as many purposes as does ginger. With it’s value as a spice, a medicine, and a landscaping plant, ginger is probably the most valuable plant for farmers.
